Tool Categories

The web application security tools can be divided mainly in two categories. One that protect applications against vulnerabilities and the others that detect vulnerabilities within web applications. Therefore we will be categorizing tools under these headings. The categories of tools currently being addressed by this project are:

Web Application Vulnerability Detection Tools

  • Threat Modeling Tools
  • Source Code Analysis (SAST) Tools
  • Vulnerability Scanning (DAST) Tools
  • Interactive Application Security Testing (IAST) Tools
  • Penetration Testing Tools

Web Application Protection Tools

  • Web Application Firewalls (WAFs)

The goal is to provide the following information (at a minimum) in each tool category:

  • Description of this tool category
  • General strengths and weaknesses of tools in this category
  • Important selection criteria for comparing tools within the category (e.g. ease of use, performance, cost, likelihood of false positives)
